This podcast is a controversial and thoughtful response to a letter from a reader who overheard his career counselor describing him as a “dumb black kid” who “has no future in business.”
I am going to provide a very careful deconstruct of some widely misinterpreted data, cited in the letter I received, which is used to propagate some hurtful stereotypes on black people, and all other ethnic groups:
1) African countries always do the worse than other countries in standardized high-school and university tests. Therefore, African/Black people are not smart. Fact: The data is not being interpreted correctly.
2) Blacks/Africans people make up the minority of the Ivy leagues. Therefore, they are not smart. Fact: The data is not being interpreted correctly.
3) Blacks/Africans do not value education. Therefore, African/Black people are not smart. Fact: Not valuing something is not the same as not being good at it.
Finally, I offer a very careful set of recommendations for the way this client should find and use advisers in his career. This is also very counter-intuitive.
