Developing Emerging Leaders

Firmsconsulting Fellows Developing Emerging Leaders

The Emerging Leaders Program (also called Emerging Fellows Program) is a scholarship we award to promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We help them plan their studies, select schools and map out their entire path to elite consulting firms, and beyond. We carefully train and groom them. This is a significant scholarship and we have high expectations.

In this podcast (and related article), using Sveta’s story, we discuss what we expect of scholarship recipients and why we have this expectation. We also discuss how we develop young people with tremendous potential.

  1. Hi Florian,

That is a good question. We are looking at some ways to do this. Some clients have donated money for more scholarships etc. The main thing we are doing is placing a far bigger emphasis on health and well being.

For example one TCO 4 participant yesterday told me she could not do cases this week due to volleyball training. Before, I would have made her cancel the volleyball training for the case and career training, but now we encourage this balance. Mainly, because not everyone should be like us. Balance is essential for most people.

We have tried pairing up Emerging Leaders with clients but this has rarely worked. Emerging Leaders spend +40 hrs with me while clients average +20 hrs so the Emerging Leaders tend to be very intense like me and we find that unless the mentor we assign to them can manage this, it falls apart fast.

We keep trying to find new things to work so if you have any ideas please share them here.

  2. Hi Michael.

I listened to some of the Emerging Leaders podcasts, and their stories are as inspiring as their commitment and strength are impressive. Thank you for sharing these with us.
Is there a way for firmsconsulting clients to help the current emerging leaders? Reading about how they sacrifice their health because they never take a break etc – surely there must be a way we could hep them get some respite, at least.

    Best regards,
    Florian
